To the north of the square is the Forbidden City and to the south the Temple of Heaven.
Forbidden City: Also known as the Imperial Palace or the Palace Museum. It is the most visited attraction for any Beijing tour. The construction of Forbidden City took 14 years and was finished in 1420. In the following years, 24 emperors, 14 in the Ming Dynast and 10 in the Qing Dynasty lived in the palace. It is the biggest and best-preserved cluster of ancient buildings in China; and it covers 720,000 square meters with 800 buildings and 9,000 rooms in total.
Niujie Mosque: The Niujie mosque is located in the city's Hui district, near numerous Muslim restaurants and shops. There are around 80 mosques in Beijing and the Ox Street Mosque is the oldest and largest of them all dating back to the 10th century. The Hui, a Chinese Muslim minority group mainly from Ningxia province, are now scattered throughout China and number around 250,000 in Beijing.

The animal houses and enclosures, with a total floor space of 40,000 square metres, include those for pandas, elephants, brown and polar bears, tigers, hippopotami, rhinoceros, antelopes, giraffes and reptiles. One of the most famous mammals in the world, the giant panda is meek and looks like a bear. So many visitors go to Beijing Zoo mainly because want to visit the pandas.
Hutong: The old narrow lanes where common people lived. All the Hutongs crisscross with each other, dotted with the Kingdergarten, the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Tea House, the lake, House of Gong Infante and local people's houses among them.
